Neil was born in Glasgow and was the youngest of three brothers – John and William were older than him by 2 and 5 years respectively. The family migrated south to England and then moved around with his father’s employment.

In 1911 Neil was living in Smith Street as a boarder. It is not known what brought him to Warwick as his parents were, at that time, living at 27 Ferndale, Tunbridge Wells.
