Robert Dudley was born in Olton, Solihull in 1880 but the family moved to Warwick shortly afterwards and he was baptised on 9th April 1881 at St Nicholas Church, along with his sisters Ethel (4) and Beatrice (3). His father, also Robert, was a Corn Merchant and his mother was Ada, nee Taylor.
In 1891, and 1901 the family were living at the same address, 38 Coten End, and had two servants. Robert attended Warwick School and Rossall School, Fleetwood, Lancashire and he is remembered on both schools’ Roll of Honour
Robert married Catherine Julia Cecil of Sandown, Isle of Wight, in Blackhead, London in 1910.
This item from the Warwick Advertiser of 15th September 1917 gives information about Robert Dudley’s life. It also shows that having been reported wounded and missing in October 1916, it was almost a year before his family were informed that he had died. This also shows that he and his wife, Catherine, lived at 5 Emscote Road. Catherine died in 1955
Robert is commemorated on Catherine’s grave in Warwick Cemetery, where the inscription reads:
To the Memory of
Lt. Col. ROBERT DUDLEY husband of CATHERINE JULIA and only son of ROBERT DUDLEY of Warwick killed in action on the Somme October 7th 1916 aged 36
