Davies, (William) Harold Pryce

Age: 23
Date of birth: 1893 (Q1)

Parents: Pryce and Jane Davies
Wife: Single
Address: 7 Swan Street

Occupation: Junior clerk in a printing office

William Harold Pryce Davies  was born in Hoxton, London in 1893.  He was the only child of Pryce and Jane Davies who were from Bettws in Montgomeryshire.

By 1901 the family were living at 1 Barrack Street, Warwick where Jane ran a general shop, on her own account, while Pryce was working as a mineral carman.

By 1911 the family were living in Swan Street and Pryce described himself as a ‘tripe dresser on own account’. William was working as a junior clerk in a printing office, there is no mention of Jane working.

Although in the census records his full name is given, he appears to have been known as Harold and it is by this name that he is described in this piece from the Warwick Advertiser as a ‘local preacher’ and  ‘very much opposed to military service.’  He did not travel overseas as he died of a fever shortly after joining his unit in the south of England:

Warwick Advertiser – 11th March 1916

Pryce died in 1934 and Jane in 1937. They were buried together in Warwick’s Birmingham Road cemetery and Harold is remembered on their grave whose inscription reads:

Also HAROLD DAVIES only son of the above called home at Weymouth March 6th 1916 aged 23 years.
