Cecil Thomas Coyne was born in Aldershot in 1894, the only son of Thomas Joseph and Rachel Ann (nee Rowe) Coyne

By 1911, the family were living at Budbrooke Barracks, just outside Warwick – Cecil was 16 and attending Warwick School.  He was a keen sportsman and a distinguished scholar.  He was a member of the 1912-13 first XV Warwick School Rugby team and a Colour Sergeant in the School Officer Training Corps.  He gained a scholarship to Emmanuel College Cambridge in 1913.  He is also listed on their Roll of Honour: https://www.emma.cam.ac.uk/about/history/emmanuel/ww1/rollofhonour/

In the report of his injury in 1915, the Warwick Advertiser notes that Cecil “gave up his studies at Cambridge in order to serve in the army for the period of the war”.  He enlisted in 1914.
