Clarke, (Reginald) Alfred

Alfred was born in the second quarter of 1889 to Mary Jane Clarke, a laundress, and registered as Reginald Alfred Clarke.

He was baptised at St Mary’s Church on 3rd June 1900 at the same time as his brother, Victor Roger MacDonald Huckvale.  The father being named on Victor’s record only as Thomas Roger Huckvale.

11 years later, on 29th August 1898, Mary Jane, then 30 and recorded as a spinster, married Thomas Roger Huckvale at St Mary’s.

The 1901 census shows Thomas and Mary living at 7 Joyce Pool with Reginald Clarke (11) and Nellie Clarke (3) but recorded as Thomas’s stepchildren.

By the 1911 census, Thomas and Mary (recorded as Jane) were living at 14 Barrack Street with children Percy (10), Walter (6) and Nellie (14 and now recorded as Huckvale).

Alfred is recorded in 1911 as a Private in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment. He was later promoted to Lance Corporal.

Alfred and his family attended the Weslyan Church in Northgate Street, now know as Northgate Methodist Church.

This odd piece appeared in the Warwick Advertiser on 13th February 1915 and must have been quite upsetting for his mother and his ‘young lady’ Miss N Gardner.

Alfred left his estate to Miss Gardner and his mother, Mrs Huckvale.
