Robert was born in North Walsham, Norfolk. His father was a bricklayer. He had one younger brother Frederick.

In 1911 he was boarding with a family in Nottingham and was working as a Grocer’s assistant.

In Autumn 1915, he married Kate Jakeman and they had a son, Frederick, named after Robert’s brother.

Kate and Frederick were still living in Coventry Road in 1939. Kate Abigail died in 1964.
