Green, Alfred Edward

Alfred was born on 8th February 1916 in Warwick. He was the only child of Alfred Edward (1887-1932) and May Elizabeth Green (1888-1933).  Alfred’s father was an antique dealer. By the time Alfred was 17 both his parents had died.

From an early age Alfred had been interested in aeroplanes. On 7th April 1937 aged 21 he gained a certificate at the Leamington, Warwick and District Aero Club to fly a de Havilland DH.60 Gypsy Moth. Alfred built his own aeroplane for flying practice.

In 1935 Alfred married Joan Constance Kimberley (1913-1943) in Warwick. According to the 1939 census the family including a domestic servant were living at 146 Cliffe Hill, Warwick. At that time Alfred’s occupation was given as a cabinet manufacturer. Their only child, Clive, was born in 1936. Having lost his father in 1941, Clive became an orphan at the age of 6 when his mother died in 1943.

Alfred, his wife, his parents and his daughter in law are all commemorated in St James’s churchyard in Milverton.
