Cyril was born in Q4 of 1925 to parents John Henry (1904-1976) and Eva Emily Newman (nee Ward – born 1903). His parents had married the year before in 1924. Eva died three years later, in 1928 and is buried in Warwick Cemetery. The family were living at 20 Woodhouse Street at the time of Eva’s death.
His father John married again in 1933 to Amy Prestidge (1900-1976). The couple did not have any further children so Cyril was an only child. In 1939 they were living at 14/16 Old Square, the site of the Old Coffee Tavern, originally a Victorian Temperance Tavern. John is described as a Caretaker/Steward and Amy is a Cook. Cyril was 14 years old at the time.
Upon his death, Cyril granted probate of £240 4s 3d to his step mother, Amy, indicating that the relationship was a good one.
