Arthur was born in 1924, the son of Charles Louis (sometimes spelt Lewis) and Ellen Alice Miles, nee King. His father, Charles was born in Warwick and his mother, Ellen, was a Kineton girl. They married in London in 1916 and at the time the Banns were read Charles was on active service in France with the Royal Welsh Fusiliers.

In 1939 the family were living in Warwick at 28 Hampton Street and Charles was working as a clerk at the Record Office. The Register shows the names of two children – Francis Louis (1928-1992) and David L (1934 -2016). There are several redacted names – presumably Arthur’s siblings since birth records show Charles and Ellen had four other children: Martha Ellen (born and died in 1920), Barbara (1926-2005), Dennis W (1930-2015) and William (b1932).
