Peter was educated at Emscote Prep School and then Warwick School. He has a keen sportsman and excelled at shooting, rugby and boxing.

The 1939 Register shows that Peter had two younger brothers, living at home – Michael (born 1923) and Robert (born 1926). His father was, at the time, working as an Electrical Installation Contractor. He also still had links with the Yeomanry and volunteered as a Special Constable.

Peter’s father, Laurence, achieved the rank of Major with the Warwickshire Yeomanry. He served in Egypt in the First World War.

Peter was a Sergeant in the Officer Corps at Warwick School – he went on to enlist in September 1938, and left with the British Expeditionary Force a year later in September 1939.
