Ernest was born in Warwick in 1917. He was the eldest of a large family of about nine children. We know that he had a sister, Florence, who was born in 1919. She was followed much later by three further siblings – Donald (born 1928), Paricia (born 1930) and Gordon (born 1935).
The 1917 Spennell’s Directory shows that the family were living at 57 Parkes Street when Ernest was born.
By 1939 the family were living at 41 Deerpark Drive and Ernest senior is described as a House Painter. There are two of the children listed, Donald and Patricia. Partricia’s maiden name has been replaced by Constable (her married name). Two of the other records are redacted, one possibly being Ernest’s.
According to the UK Army Roll of Honour, Ernest was living in Coventry in 1940. His father also Ernest (1893-1964) had been a career soldier and had served in the Middlesex Regiment during World War One.
